In an effort to incentivize the growth of solar power various departments within the federal government offer grants to make the transition more affordable.

With the end of the solar feed in tariff fit in march 2019 an eco3 grant is the now the way to secure a free government funded grant. Solar pv panels are not covered as part of the scheme but solar thermal panels for solar water heating is part of the primary measures that are covered by this scheme. Department of housing and urban development offers grants for home improvements using energy alternatives which can include solar panels. Instead the departments provide grants to low income and rural areas alongside farms tribes schools and nonprofit organizations.

Part of this initiative was to provide a loan to homeowners which could be used to install solar panels. In july the government announced the new green homes grant which provides homeowners and landlords in england with 5 000 10 000 vouchers for energy saving renovations. Grants are available in low income areas.
